‘The Middleman’ meets ‘Doctor Who’ in fanfic

It’s kind of a geek’s dream come true.

“The Middleman,” a comic book series and much-beloved, yet short-lived ABC Family TV series – now available on DVD – has been called “America’s ‘Doctor Who.’” In a new bit of dreamy time-travel sci-fi, the Middleman actually meets Doctor Who!

Needless to say, there was much rejoicing in the nerd community over this work of fan fiction, including “Middleman” star Natalie Morales’ response that the author “wrote her dreams.”

What is unusual about this particular fanfic, is the fact that the writer is Javier Grillo-Marxuach, the creator of “The Middleman.”

CNN Geek Out spoke with Grillo-Marxuach, a fanboy who is also known for his work on “Lost,” “Medium” and “Jake 2.0,” about this meeting of the Middleman and the Doctor.

CNN Geek Out: What inspired you to write this fanfic? Are you a big “Doctor Who” fan?

Grillo-Marxuach: I became a fan in the late ’70s. I grew up in Puerto Rico, where they ran the Tom Baker adventures as a strip at 7 on weekdays.

“Don’t be a dick.” It’s a simple statement that has provided a societal foundation for millennia from the Ten Commandments to the new commandments of political correctness. Yet time and time again literary figures ignore this tenet and reap the face full of semen that comes from sowing their fields with copious amounts of dickery.

Chad Bowman, the protagonist of FIVE SENSES, is one such character that has not learned from the follies of yesteryear. While in Seattle on a business trip that promises to be the deal of a lifetime, Chad lays witness to the brutal slaying of a waitress from a diner he stops in to have an eat. Late for his meeting, Chad sloughs off his moral obligation to help the police identify the killer. With a wink and a nod this epic dick goes off to his meeting, signs the deal and then begins to imbibe the nightlife of Seattle reveling in his success with blondes and booze. While at the club, someone starts to play mind games with Chad: a hidden note on a cocktail napkin with the simple message “come forward” arrives with one of his many drinks. Likewise, the next morning Chad is greeted with a message on his hotel mirror reminding him of his moral turpitude.

EAGLE MOUNTAIN — Writer Jake Black makes a living spinning tales for kid-friendly comics and TV shows. But he recently took a surprising turn by trying his hand at horror for Viper Comics’ fall release, “Five Senses.”

The result is a critically acclaimed new title, which could be creeping its way toward the big screen thanks in part to a Bradley Cooper-starring viral video.

The Eagle Mountain man is also working on another project that will be a departure from his cartoon and comic-book roots: an inspirational book looking at cancer through the lens of Mormon spirituality.

Meanwhile, “Five Senses” continues to generate a buzz since its digital release in September. The Stephen King-ish creeper about a man who didn’t have the sense to come forward after witnessing a violent murder and is therefore cursed to lose his — as the title suggests — five senses garnered favorable press from Wired and USA Today, among others.

“It’s definitely the best reviewed thing I’ve done,” said Black, 32. “I’m astounded at how well it’s been received.

When Viper Comics commissioned him to pen the chiller, it was an opportunity to put his own stamp on a genre he hadn’t explored professionally before. As expected in horror, there’s violence, but the dialogue is decidedly tamer.

“I tried to pull back on some of the language they had in the dialogue, mainly because of my reputation as a kids writer,” he said.

Still, it’s not the sort of thing he’ll let his 3-year-old son read.

“He’s the reason I write kids stuff. I want to mostly write stuff he can read,” said Black, who made a name for himself in such properties as “Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles” and “Batman: The Brave and the Bold.”

Nightmares In Oz is a brilliant horror comic, especially for those fans of the Slasher Horror genre.  I was instantly reminded of classics such as Nightmare on Elm Street, Friday the 13^th and Halloween when I read it – which is a good start considering the cult status those movies have gained!
